LA High Table: Zoom Edition with Drs. C. Jessica Metcalf & Bryan Grenfell: How 2020 went Viral
This virtual event features Princeton professors C. Jessica Metcalf and Bryan Grenfell who will speak on infectious disease dynamics.

We invite Yale, MIT, and Princeton alums to join us for the Los Angeles High Table series aimed at showcasing dynamic speakers in an intimate setting. We especially welcome established alums in fields relevant to the talk and younger alums in all fields. This virtual event features Princeton professors C. Jessica Metcalf and Bryan Grenfell who will speak on infectious disease dynamics.

Registration: RSVP today! Space is limited, so register early and be sure to attend!

Date: Sunday, April 26th
Time: 11:45am PDT – 1:40pm PDT
Location: We are lucky to bring this event to your home via Zoom. Connection instructions will be sent to all registrants the Friday prior to the event.
Price: Free
Event format: 15 mins Zoom mingling, 60 min High Table Program featuring Drs. C. Jessica Metcalf and Bryan Grenfell, 40 mins Q&A

About the speakers:
Dr. C. Jessica Metcalf is a demographer – an expert in the study of the statistics of populations. Her broad interests include evolutionary ecology (how the interaction between species impacts evolution) and infectious disease dynamics. Dr. Metcalf received her B.A. at the University of Oxford in biology. For her PhD studies at Imperial College London, Dr. Metcalf used demographic models to predict the size and age at flowering of a plant called a monocarpic perennial. She conducted her postdoctoral research at various institutions before joining Princeton as an assistant professor in 2014. Her group’s recent research bridges the gap between the evolution of disease within the host and between hosts; she is particularly interested in the impact of these dynamics on public health.

Dr. Bryan Grenfell is a population biologist. His focus is on the the dynamics of infectious diseases. In other words, he studies how disease is distributed in a population, how the distribution changes with time, and how the situation can be altered by vaccinations, immunity, and other bottlenecks to transmission. Dr. Grenfell grew up in the United Kingdom where he received his B.S. from Imperial College and his PhD from the University of York. After 14 years at the University of Cambridge, he came to the United States in 2004, first as a Professor at Pennsylvania State University before joining the Princeton faculty in 2009. He holds numerous awards for his work including a Fellowship of Royal Society of London in 2004 and a Fellowship of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011.
