Volunteer to read with Reading to Kids on their College
day. Reading to Kids is a 20 year old
grass roots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved students K-5 with a
love of reading. The reading clubs are at 8 LAUSD elementary schools.
Books for each grade and themes are coordinated with LAUSD. After
reading, the kids have arts and crafts and each kid receives a book to
take home. Volunteers from all schools are encouraged to go to El Cholo
after the reading clubs.
For every November’s reading club, in
addition to the regular activities & November’s theme of “Wonders
of Science & Technology”, volunteers wear their college t-shirts and
give students the opportunity to learn about their
college. This encourages the students to consider a college
education. For most students, the only person they know who attended college is
their teacher. (For example, kids at my school by Western & Pico didn’t
know what USC or UCLA stood for or what state they were in.)
--Volunteers
can register at any school— groups will be acknowledged at each school. I
volunteer at LA Elementary -Karen Green
Also— after
each Reading To Kids volunteer day, volunteers are encouraged to go to El
Cholo on Western to meet and relax with other volunteers. (El Cholo
donates appetizers, everything else is volunteer paid). It’s quite fun
and a diverse group. So, perhaps add something like, “After you volunteer, come meet
other RTK volunteers and Yale Club members at El Cholo."
